The department was founded in 1999 after the reorganization of the former Department of Philosophy and History. The staff of the department actively participates in international conferences, organizes conferences at the university, goes to the secondments abroad and takes part in international and local projects.

Study Programs: The Heritage (specialized professional studies, extra-mural), History (BA; FT, extra-mural studies), Cultural Studies (2008 admission, MA; FT). 

Research interests:

1. Material culture in Lithuania in the Iron Age;
2. The development of the Jagiellonian political system in Central Europe in the 15^th and 16^th c.;
3. The development of the "political nation" in the Great Duchy of Lithuania;
4. The history of self-government in the Republic of Lithuania in 1918-1940;
5. The resistance movement in Lithuania;
6. The development of political parties in Lithuania at the end of 20^th century;
7. National minorities in Lithuania;
8. History and ideology of sport in Lithuania;
9. Relativistic conception of the Heritage.
