The department of the Russian language was established on the 1st of September, 1949. Later this department was reorganized into two ones: the department of the Russian language and the department of Russian literature. In October, 1973 they were united again but in January, 1997 both departments were finally separated. In the period of these reorganizations the heads of the departments were assoc. prof. J. Jurkėnas (1968-1973, 1975-1979) and assoc. prof. A. Gudavičius (1973-1975). In September, 1979 the department of the Russian language was reorganized into the following ones: the department of modern Russian and the department of the Russian language and methodology. In January, 1992 both departments were united and the new department was called the department of the Russian language. Assoc. prof. N. Merkienė was the head of the new department until September, 1998. Prof. A. Gudavičius has been working as the head of the department since 1998.
