The Department of Foreign Languages was founded in 1962. Several reorganisations followed and in 1999 the Department led by lector J. Šapalienė started functioning. Since 2000 lector R. Jocaitė has been elected Head of the Department. The staff of the Department includes 2 Dr. Assoc. Prof., 6 lectors and 9 assistants. Every year young professionals and post graduate students are invited to read courses, develop competences and gain teaching practice.
Courses given by the Department include foreign languages for specific purposes by undergraduate and postgraduate study programs and as electives.
The staff are engaged in the following researches: design and development of foreign language courses for specific purposes, terminology, dictionary development methodology, students‘ needs analysis.
The Department teachers have carried out researches on applied linguistics, cross-cultural education in foreign language classes, IT application in teaching/learning foreign languages, business English/German, special education terminology.
The teachers have been actively participating in SOCRATES/ERASMUS program (universities in Poland, Germany, UK, Sweden, etc.) and local and international conferences.
Every year 8-10 research papers are published in various work collections in Lithuania and abroad.
The Department teachers have been working on 2 projects:
•· "Communicative Competences Assessment and Self-Assessment System" under the GP document 2.4 "Development of Life-Long Learning Conditions" funded by the EU, contract No. ESF/2004/2.40-03-314/BPD-83/PaeS-12500-547 (2006-2008), the result of which is a developed system for the assessment of communicative competence levels in foreign languages under the European framework and introduction of the European language portfolio;
•· ARIADNE, contract No. BPD2004-ESF-2.5.0-03-05/0075 (2007-2008), the result of which is a developed distance learning course Scientific Business English/German for post graduate study programs.
