In 1997 on the basic of Agrobiological station was established Botanic garden. Currently the Botanic garden in city territory occupied 2.5 ha and plant collection contain over 3000 taxa.
Main research areas: Biodiversity in situ and ex situ; introduction and acclimatization of ornamental plants; phenological observation.
Since 2003 Šiauliai University Natural Science Faculty Botanic garden is BGCI (Botanic Gardens Conservation International), Planta Europa and LUBSA (Lithuanian Universtities Botanic Gardens Association) member. Botanic Garden of Šiauliai University in the International Phenology Garden in Europe (IPG) is involved in 2005.
There are seed fund collecting in Botanic garden. Seed interchange are pursuing with over 250 world botanic gardens.
Section of rock garden. In 2008 there are more than 800 taxa, majority of them are from alpine level. The collection is formed considering some criterions, such as decorativeness, geographical aspects and infrequency of species.
Section of plant taxonomy and geography. There are about 700 taxa in this section, included and Lithuanian vanishing species flora (91 species, 61 included in Lithuania Red book). This section is complementing by plants considering to exclusive morphological, systematic and decorative features of species and geographical subordination.
Section of Ericaceae family plants. In this section are doing micro vegetative and generative reproduction investigations, researches of common evaluation of collection.
Phenological garden. For Phenology observation presently observed 14 plant species phenology phases. There is study of the seasonal timing of life circle events in relation to environmental factors.
Section of field floriculture. At the moment in this collection grow about 900 taxa annual, biennial and perennial, bulbous and corm, rhizome and tuber flowers from 62 families and 172 genus. The biggest attention is paid for species and genus of decorative perennial flowers, such as Iris (in the collection there are 90 species), Lilium (64 species) and Hemerocallis (90 species).
Section of woody plants. At the moment in this collection are about 220 taxa coniferous and 170 taxa deciduous trees shrubs and subshrubs.
