In 1948 the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics was established in the Teachers' Training Institute. In 1954 Teachers' Training Institute was reorganized into the Pedagogical Institute and the Department of Physics was subdivided into two parts - Mathematics and Physics and Natural Science. In 1956 it became the Department of Physics.
Main activities of the Department are: applications of semi relativistic nuclear model; exploration of nonlinear 4th range combined relaxational dynamic system; reduction of spectra to parameters of an effective diatomic Hamiltonian containing the generalized potential energy function.

The Department of Environmental Research was established in 1999.
Main activity of the Department is an evaluation of anthropogenical influence to ecosystems and biodiversity research.
